IELTS Writing Band 6.5 to 7.5: A Criterion-Level Guide

What actually separates 6.5 from 7.5

IELTS Writing is scored equally across four criteria (25% each). An overall 6.5 often looks like two criteria at 7 and two at 6, or one criterion at 5.5 dragging the average down. Band 7.5 usually requires at least three criteria near 7.5 with no serious weak link.

Under the public descriptors, Band 7 Writing shows a clear position, extended and supported main ideas, logical sequencing, flexible vocabulary, and a variety of complex structures with good control. Band 6.5 often “addresses the task” but under-develops key parts, or relies on template linking words instead of meaning-driven progression.

Task Response: the most common 6.5 killer

Many 6.5 essays use decent language but do not fully answer the prompt. “Discuss both views and give your opinion” requires both sides plus a clear stance. “Do advantages outweigh disadvantages?” requires weighing, not a list of positives only.

Five-minute pre-writing checklist

1. Underline the instruction words: discuss, agree, causes, solutions, outweigh
2. List every noun constraint in the prompt (population, setting, time frame)
3. Decide your position or structural balance (even “discuss both” needs a final leaning)
4. Map each body paragraph to one checklist item so you cannot drift off-topic

Coherence and Cohesion: meaning beats linking words

Band 6.5 scripts often stack “Furthermore, Moreover, In addition” while the logical relationship between paragraphs stays unclear. Band 7 cohesion is meaning-driven: contrast with while/whereas, cause with therefore/as a result, examples with for instance — and every paragraph opens with a clear topic sentence.

Paragraph shape (Band 7 oriented — understand it, do not memorise blindly)

Topic sentence → explanation → example or mechanism → mini-conclusion or bridge. If the topic sentence cannot cover everything in the paragraph, split the paragraph.

Self-check questions

• Could a reader understand your argument from first sentences alone?
• Are there sentences unrelated to the topic sentence?
• Are references clear (what does “this” or “it” point to)?

Lexical Resource: precision over ornament

Moving from 6.5 toward 7.5 is not about replacing every “good” and “bad.” It is topic precision, natural collocations, and controlled paraphrase. Examiners penalise unnatural word pairings and heavy repetition.

Practical tactics

• Build twenty-word topic lists (education, technology, environment, health) as collocations, not isolated items
• Task 1 trend verbs: increase, rise, grow, climb / fall, drop, decline / fluctuate, level off
• After writing, circle words repeated more than three times; replace two instances — not the whole essay

Avoid cramming rare words for Band 7 optics. An accurate simple word often beats a wrong “advanced” one.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Band 7 expects variety with few errors. Band 6.5 often shows attempted complex sentences plus agreement, article, tense, or fragment issues. Fix systematic errors first: subject–verb agreement, articles, tense consistency, incomplete clauses.

Weekly grammar focus (rotate)

• Week 1: complex noun phrases and relative clauses
• Week 2: conditionals and concession (although, even though)
• Week 3: participle clauses (use carefully — logical subject must match)
• Week 4: punctuation and sentence boundaries (eliminate run-ons)

Introduce only one new structure type per essay until it is stable.

Task 1 versus Task 2: protect your time budget

Academic module: Task 1 minimum 150 words (target 20 minutes), Task 2 minimum 250 words (target 40 minutes). Many 6.5 candidates over-write Task 2 and starve Task 1, losing the overview. A Band 7 path requires both tasks meet standard — Task 1 is not optional collateral.

Task 1 drill: thirty seconds to find the overall trend → paragraph by feature or time stage → compare in each paragraph, do not list. Task 2 drill: outline is non-negotiable; the conclusion must answer the introduction’s promise.

Timed practice protocol (per essay)

1. 0–5 min: read prompt + outline (Task 2) or select key features (Task 1)
2. 5–35 min (T2) or 5–18 min (T1): write forward; avoid massive deletion
3. Final 3–5 min: clarity and obvious grammar only — do not rewrite your position
4. Post-write 15 min: tag errors under one criterion only

Keep a simple table: date | question type | weakest criterion | specific error | single fix target next essay. After four entries, patterns appear (e.g., every Task 2 misses one side of “discuss both views”). Band 7.5 comes from eliminating repeats, not from one lucky perfect draft.

When Task 2 types need different TR shapes

Not every essay uses the same skeleton. Match structure to instruction:

• Agree/disagree: clear thesis in introduction; two body paragraphs each proving one reason; optional concession paragraph if time allows.
• Discuss both views: paragraph A for view 1, paragraph B for view 2, paragraph C (or integrated conclusion) for your opinion.
• Problem/solution: at least two problems with causes, at least two solutions linked to those problems — not a solution list unrelated to problems named.
• Advantages/disadvantages: explicit weighing language (“on balance”, “the drawbacks are more significant because…”).

Using one memorised four-paragraph template for all types is a common 6.5 trap. Band 7 writers adapt shape while keeping one idea per paragraph.

Task 1 by visual type (quick priorities)

• Line graphs: overall trend + key intersections or overtaking points.
• Bar charts: highest/lowest comparisons and meaningful groupings — not every bar.
• Pie charts: largest shares and notable differences between charts if multiple.
• Tables: select columns/rows with clearest contrasts; do not recopy the table.
• Processes/maps: logical stages or spatial changes; overview states total number of stages or main change.

Revision workflow: one essay, one criterion

After timed writing, resist editing everything at once. Day 1 post-write: highlight Task Response gaps only — add missing prompt parts in the margin for the next draft. Day 3 new prompt: apply that single fix under time. Day 5 post-write: Coherence pass — reorder sentences so topic sentences truly govern paragraphs. This sequencing mirrors how examiners read: they do not reward a polished sentence in a paragraph that fails the task.

Second-draft polishing of the same essay is useful once per week for learning, but exam score gains come from new prompts under time. Treat rewrites as study sessions, not as proof you will score 7.5 on unseen questions.

Band 6.5 habits that cap you below 7

• Introduction over-length: two sentences paraphrase + thesis is enough; do not spend ten minutes on hooks.
• Examples without mechanism: “For example, many people use phones” does not explain why your claim is true.
• Conclusion introduces new ideas: Band 6.5 scripts often add fresh arguments in the final paragraph — that damages TR.
• Synonym obsession: changing “students” to “learners” to “pupils” in every sentence looks unnatural.
• Complex vocabulary in Task 1: Task 1 rewards clarity and accurate comparison language, not essay-style abstraction.

Integrating with full-test preparation

Writing-only drills build skill, but Band 7 overall also requires stamina across Listening, Reading, and Speaking.
